Crossing The Darian Gap...New Ferry Service

UPDATE: See this article about the new ferry service called Ferry XPress.

On May 10, Aventura 2000 will launch ferry service between the city of Colon in Panama and Cartagena in Colombia.

The Greek-manned Nissos Rodos ferry of the Pan American Seaways cruise line will make the trip in approximately 12 hours and has a capacity for about 1,500 passengers, 500 cars and 2,000 square feet of cargo.

Although Aventura 2000 will initially introduce the service for half the passenger load, there will be a total of six trips a week, three from each port. If the math is correct, close to 150,000 passengers could be ferried between the two countries a year.

Trips are scheduled to depart from Colon on Monday,Thursday and Saturday and from Cartagena on Sunday, Tuesday and Friday, with the cost of passage ranging from a $99 seat to a $508 presidential sleeper cabin.

The last ferry crossings between the two countries were on the Crucero Express 15 years ago.
